How to Prepare for Exams in Short Time

The exam is in a few days and you haven’t even opened the book… Sounds familiar? If this is the case, stay with us because this article can show you how to calm down and give your best not only to pass the exams but also to get the best possible scores in really short time.

We are all aware of the fact that the best way to pass exams and get high grades is to study every day and give ourselves enough time before every exam to go through the notes and books at least one more time. However, many young people leave these preparations for the last few days. It may sound strange but partying is not always to blame; it can also happen that a person finds it impossible to concentrate on studying due to family or other problems and before he/she realizes it, the exam date is here. In these situations, people often become so worried that they make things even worse and this is where our tips about preparing exams in short time can help you a lot.

Here are the most useful tips (given in the sequence) you should apply in order to achieve the best results.

✅ Get rid of the stress

Stress has never helped anyone and it won’t help you either. Before you start studying, try to relax and get rid of fear. If you start panicking, you will waste a lot of time that you would otherwise spend on reading and repeating and maybe even remembering something. Meditation, yoga, playing calming music with some good bluetooth headphones or simple deep breathing might help you to relax, start thinking clearly, and focus on the material you have to go through.

✅ Plan the process

We believe that in these situations you are aware that you don’t have a lot of time at your disposal. However, that doesn’t mean that you should sit all day and night reading the materials and revising what you learned. After you have calmed down, you should sit and make a detailed plan of your activities during this preparation period. You should plan everything starting from the moment you wake up – you should plan the duration of the studying sessions, the number and the duration of the breaks, etc. You should also plan what material you will be focusing on and carefully divide it into parts, chapters or in some other way depending on the type of material. The plan should include the time necessary for learning each of the parts and you should try to stick to it.

✅ Get rid of all the potential distractions and set goals

Getting rid of distractions is important even if you have enough time to prepare for your exams but it becomes one of the crucial factors in memorizing as many data as possible in critical situations. You should sit in a place where you won’t have any access to your phone, computer and Internet (unless your studying is tightly related to them), TV, etc. You may find it impossible at the beginning but you will get used to a peaceful and quiet environment and you will be surprised how easy is to study in these situations. Setting a goal at the very beginning and constantly reminding yourself of that goal shall also be motivating.

✅ Focus on essential material

If you don’t have enough time to read all the material and learn everything, don’t do it. It happens sometimes that it’s even not necessary to read everything because your test can’t include all the potential questions. It is more likely that the teacher will focus on the most important chapters in the book or the most important parts in every chapter. You should do the same. If you have attended your lessons, it will be even easier to differentiate the important from the irrelevant.

✅ Make notes, draw, highlight…

It is common that writing makes us memorize things faster. This is why it is important to make notes when you’re reading the material. Later, when you want to go through it once again, it will be easier because you have already selected the important data. The same rule can be applied to drawing and using colorful highlighters. Colors help you highlight the important facts. When you want to revise the material once again, you can read only the highlighted sentences. Drawing charts, schemes, tables, etc. are also effective in these situations. When you read a question at the exam, it is very likely that you will remember the drawing, which will lead to the right answer.

Now that we have listed all the important parts of the process of studying itself, we have to mention some of the following activities that must not be forgotten in any situation.

✅ Don’t drown in coffee

We understand you have to stay focused and awake so you can study but that doesn’t mean that gallons of energy drinks and coffee will help you. If you exaggerate, these may cause anxiety and even more stress. Try eating nutritious food that will activate your brain. If you need more caffeine, try drinking black or green tea.

✅ Take breaks

No matter if they last 15 minutes or more, breaks are necessary because they enable your brain to cool down and refresh. The breaks can be used for taking meals, listening to music, exercising, etc. Just don’t play video games, watch soaps or do any of the addictive activities.

✅ Make sure you are comfortable

Whenever you are doing something important that requires 100% brain activity, one of the things you should ensure is comfort. We don’t say you have to lay in your bed but you can get some comfy chair, adjust the light and play some calming and inspiring music that won’t distract you but help you focus.

✅ If you’re not sure – Ask

If you have any doubts about the materials you should go through before your exam, don’t hesitate to ask your colleagues or even your professors. Who would know better than them which part of the book is supposed to be read? It’s not embarrassing, it can even be beneficial because professors will see that you care about your exams.

In the end, we have to say that we are aware that all of you are different and that different methods can be applied to different types of personalities. For example, some people study better on their own while others memorize things better when they work in groups. This is why we don’t expect you to follow all the advice but to choose those that can be applied to you.

Good luck!
